Bangalore to Belur Distance: Route, Time & Travel Options

Bangalore to Belur: Distance and Route

Belur sits 222 km northwest of Bangalore. The journey takes 4.5 to 5 hours by road under normal traffic, longer during monsoon or peak season. The main route is via NH48 (Bengaluru–Pune highway), turning off at Kunigal towards Hassan district.

What's the Actual Driving Route?

Bangalore → Tumkur (70 km, 1.5 hours) → Kunigal (50 km, 1 hour) → Belur (102 km, 2.5–3 hours). The first two-thirds of the route are expressway-standard. The Kunigal–Belur stretch is narrower, hillier, and slower, especially near Halebidu. Road quality is fair but watchable for potholes after rain.

GPS typically shows either the NH48 path or the direct Tumkur–Hassan route. Both take similar time. The Hassan route has better surfaces but adds 30–40 km.

Travel Options Compared

Self-drive car:

  • Cost: ₹1,500–2,500 (fuel, tolls, parking)
  • Time: 4.5–5.5 hours one-way
  • Advantage: Flexibility to stop, visit Halebidu (12 km away)
  • Downside: Fatigue on a long day; parking in Belur town is tight

State bus (Karnataka BMTC or KSRTC):

  • Cost: ₹400–550 per person (return ₹750–1,100)
  • Time: 5–6 hours one-way, frequent stops
  • Frequency: 3–4 services daily from Bangalore Central or Shivajinagar
  • Advantage: Cheapest option; no driving stress
  • Downside: Slower, early morning starts, limited seating comfort

Private taxi or cab:

  • Cost: ₹2,500–3,500 one-way for a shared cab; ₹4,500–6,000 for exclusive hire
  • Time: 4.5–5 hours, direct
  • Advantage: Door-to-door, can negotiate multi-day packages
  • Downside: Most expensive; driver fatigue issues on returns

Ride-sharing (Ola/Uber):

  • Cost: ₹1,800–2,800 per seat, variable surge pricing
  • Time: 4.5–5.5 hours
  • Advantage: Known pricing, insured
  • Downside: Availability can be poor; often unavailable for outstation on return

Best Seasons and Timing

Belur is a year-round destination, but timing matters for the drive:

October–March: Ideal. Clear skies, roads dry, daylight until 5.30 p.m. Morning departures (6–7 a.m.) let you arrive by 11 a.m.–noon, giving a full afternoon at temples.

April–May: Hot, roads clear, but peak temple crowds. Early starts essential.

June–September: Monsoon. Roads safe but wet, journey stretches to 5.5–6 hours. Landslip risk near Hassan. Go only if necessary.

Fuel and Tolls

Fuel cost (petrol, 10 L/100 km) is roughly ₹900–1,100 return. Tolls on NH48 are ₹245–320 depending on vehicle type and entry point. Budget ₹600–700 total for tolls and fuel combined.

Belur as a Stop

Most visitors spend 3–5 hours in Belur itself—the Chennakeshava Temple is the draw, best visited 8–11 a.m. or 4–6 p.m. to avoid midday heat and crowds. Halebidu (12 km) is an easy add-on and shares similar temple architecture. A day trip is feasible; overnight allows a slower pace and morning temple viewing before return.

Overnight Option?

Belur has basic lodges and homestays but no luxury chains. Staying overnight means an early morning temple visit (fewer tourists before 8 a.m.) and time to explore Hassan town (30 km) for museums or local food. Most return-trip planners skip this and drive back by 4–5 p.m. to reach Bangalore by 9 p.m.

Road Hazards and Tips

  • NH48 traffic: Heavy southbound towards Bangalore 4–7 p.m. Return late afternoon or evening to beat crowds.
  • Kunigal–Halebidu ghat: Tight curves, slower trucks. Overtaking is risky. Allow extra 30 minutes.
  • Fuel availability: Fill up in Tumkur or Kunigal. Petrol pumps are sparse between Kunigal and Belur.
  • Phone signal: Generally good on NH48; patchy in Belur old town.
  • Weather checks: Verify monsoon road status with local transport before mid-August travel.

Day Trip Itinerary Example

6.30 a.m.: Depart Bangalore.
10.30 a.m.: Arrive Belur, visit Chennakeshava Temple.
1 p.m.: Lunch (local Karnataka or roadside dhabas).
2.30 p.m.: Visit Halebidu temple if time permits (12 km, 20-minute drive).
4 p.m.: Return drive.
8.30–9 p.m.: Arrive Bangalore.

Total road time: ~9 hours. Total cost (self-drive): ₹1,500–2,000 fuel + tolls.
