What exactly is Virupaksha Temple?
Virupaksha is the oldest functioning temple in Hampi and the spiritual anchor of the entire site. It predates the Vijayanagara Empire and has been in continuous worship for over 1,000 years. The presiding deity is Virupaksha, a form of Shiva. The temple sits at the western end of Hampi Bazaar, directly facing the long colonnade street that once housed merchants from across the Deccan.
The main gopuram (entrance tower) stands 50 metres tall. It was built in 1442 CE under King Deva Raya II. You can spot it from most of Hampi's central zone.

The temple closes completely between 1 PM and 3 PM every day. No exceptions. If you arrive at 12:45 PM, you will be asked to leave.

Avoid: 10 AM–1 PM in October–March when domestic tour groups arrive in volume. In summer (April–June), the courtyard stones are genuinely hot underfoot by 9 AM.
Is there an entry fee?

The Main Gopuram
The 50-metre tower has nine storeys decorated with stucco figures. Take time to look at it from the Hampi Bazaar end — that long view with the colonnaded street in the foreground is the classic Hampi shot.
The Outer Courtyard
The colonnaded outer courtyard surrounds the inner sanctum. Rows of carved pillars, mandapas (halls), and subsidiary shrines. The carving quality here is high — look for detailed panels on the pillar bases.
Pampa Devi Shrine
To the south of the main sanctum is a shrine to Pampa Devi, the goddess of the Tungabhadra river. Virupaksha is considered her consort. This shrine is older than the main gopuram.
Virupaksha Sanctum
The inner sanctum holds the Shiva lingam. Non-Hindus may or may not be permitted to enter the innermost chamber depending on the day and priest on duty. You can always see the sanctum from the threshold. Morning and evening aartis happen here — worth timing your visit to catch one.
The Pinhole Camera Chamber
This is genuinely interesting and often missed. In the inner mandapa, there is a dark chamber where an inverted image of the main gopuram is projected on the wall via a small hole — a natural pinhole camera effect. Ask the temple staff to show you; it takes 30 seconds and is worth seeing.
The Temple Elephant
Lakshmi, the temple elephant, is usually present in the mornings. She blesses visitors in exchange for a coin. She is walked to the Tungabhadra river each morning for a bath — you may see this procession if you arrive before 7 AM.
The Second Gopuram
There is a smaller inner gopuram leading to the sanctum. It dates to an earlier period than the main tower and shows more restrained Hoysala-influenced carving.
How long do you need?
For a thorough visit: 1.5–2 hours. If you are also attending an arti ceremony: add 30–45 minutes. Rush visit taking in the main areas only: 45 minutes.
Do not rush the outer courtyard. The pillar carvings and the subsidiary shrines are genuinely detailed and most visitors walk past them quickly.

Virupaksha is in Hampi's Sacred Centre cluster. Within 1 km on foot:
- Hemakuta Hill temples – 5-minute walk south. Cluster of pre-Vijayanagara temples. Good sunrise viewpoint.
- Hampi Bazaar – the colonnade street immediately in front of the eastern gopuram.
- Matanga Hill – 2 km east. The best sunrise point in all of Hampi. Steep 20-minute climb.
- Achyutaraya Temple – 1.5 km east on foot via the bazaar ruins.
